Murcia school calendar 2026-2027: Key term dates and holidays confirmed

The regional government has finalised the official academic calendar, including everything from nursery start dates to local bank holidays and saints' days

Murcia school calendar 2026-2027: Key term dates and holidays confirmed

The regional government has officially announced the school calendar for the upcoming 2026–2027 academic year in Murcia, published in the Region's official gazette (BORM).

The school year kicks off in early September, but the exact date your children return depends on their age group. For the little ones in public nurseries (ages 0 to 3), as well as children in regular infant and primary schools (Infantil and Primaria, ages 3 to 12), the first day of school is Tuesday September 8 2026. They will wrap up their academic year on June 22 2027.

Older children heading into secondary school (ESO, ages 12 to 16) and high school (Bachillerato, ages 16 to 18) get a slightly longer summer break. Their classes officially begin on Thursday September 10 2026 and conclude on June 21 2027. However, if you have a teenager in their final year of Bachillerato, keep in mind that their final weeks may look a bit different. Their normal classes often finish earlier to help them with intensive prep for the Selectividad university entrance exams.

For families with teenagers in Formación Profesional (FP), Spain's popular vocational training system, start dates are slightly staggered. This hands-on alternative to traditional high school is divided into levels: Basic FP courses begin alongside secondary schools on September 10, while Intermediate (Grado Medio) and Higher (Grado Superior) programs start a few days later on Monday, September 14 2026. They all finish on June 21 2027, though older students may wrap up earlier depending on their exams and mandatory company work placements.

If your children attend specialised regional academies, keep in mind they follow their own timelines. Sports programs run the longest, from September 1 2026 to July 30 2027, while Higher Arts begin on September 4, followed by the Official Language Schools (EOI) on September 7. Music schools open on September 10, with Dance and Visual Arts starting last on September 14.

It is also worth noting that while students don't attend, teachers are back at work from September 1 for curriculum planning. Similarly, the days between the final bell in June and June 30 are used by staff for end-of-year administrative duties and report cards.

Christmas and Easter

Spain's major school holidays are centred around Christmas and Easter, and the dates are standardised across all age groups and educational levels. The Christmas break officially runs from December 24 2026 through to January 6 2027 (inclusive), meaning children return to school after the Three Kings Day celebrations. Parents should also note that Wednesday, December 23 2026 has been declared a 'non-teaching day,' effectively giving families an extra day to kickstart their holiday travel.

Later in the spring, the official Easter holidays (Semana Santa) are scheduled from March 22 to March 29 2027, for all schools. However, many municipalities across the Region use their local holidays and non-teaching days to make the Easter holidays longer. This often means there are two weeks off around Easter.

Local and 'Patron Saint' holidays

Apart from the main Christmas and Easter breaks, there are several regional and local closures to circle on your calendar. Every school is closed on weekends and national public holidays, but local towns also have a say in the calendar. Each municipality in Murcia adds two local public holidays based on local festivals, alongside three additional non-teaching days chosen by town school boards. Because these five days vary completely depending on the specific town you live in, it is always a good idea to check your local town hall website for their specific dates.
