Murcia's pharmacies step up as safe spaces for victims of gender-based violence
A new regional agreement will see pharmacists trained to detect and respond to domestic abuse, making every pharmacy a potential lifeline
Walk into almost any pharmacy in the Region of Murcia and you'll find a familiar, trusted face behind the counter. It's that very accessibility, and the quiet confidence people place in their local pharmacist, that lies at the heart of a significant new initiative to tackle gender-based violence in the region.The Governing Council has authorised a formal collaboration agreement between the regional government and the Official College of Pharmacists of the Region of Murcia (COFRM), aimed at turning the region's pharmacy network into an active front line in the early detection of violence against women.
It builds on work that was already quietly underway. Back in November 2025, pharmacies across the region were designated as #PuntosVioleta, or Violet Points, places where women experiencing abuse or sexual assault could seek help, guidance and information. Each pharmacy received the #PuntoVioleta logo, which includes a QR code linking to a dedicated guide covering how to detect gender violence, its different forms, and the support available to victims.Paula Payá, president of the COFRM, was clear about why pharmacies are well placed to play this role. "Pharmacies, due to their accessibility and proximity, and the relationship of trust between users and pharmacists, are an appropriate place to connect women who are victims of gender violence and inform them of the resources offered by the government," she said, adding that the initiative is aimed "at both the victims and their families."
The new agreement takes that commitment further. Under the terms of the collaboration, the regional Ministry of Social Policy will advise on awareness campaigns, update the official action protocol for community pharmacies, and develop prevention and support materials to be made available in pharmacies across the region. Pharmacists will also receive specialist training, delivered both online and in person by experts in the field, so they're equipped to recognise the signs of abuse and know how to respond.
Payá didn't shy away from the scale of the problem the initiative is addressing. She described gender violence as "a growing social scourge," pointing to a more than 20% rise in reports of sexual offences in the region over the past year.
Murcia has consistently featured among the regions with the highest rates of gender violence in Spain, a pattern that has persisted even as awareness of the issue grows. The broader picture across Spain has been equally concerning, with reports of gender-based violence rising steadily in recent years.
"We pharmacists are very clear about our social commitment, especially to the most vulnerable people," Payá added.
It's a quietly powerful idea. Sometimes the most important conversations happen not in a police station or a court, but across a pharmacy counter.
