After nearly a decade of requests and paperwork, plans to improve access to the future Cercanías train station in Alhama de Murcia are finally moving forward. Rail infrastructure manager Adif has awarded the contract for the new road links to Valencia-based firm Torrescamara y Cía de Obras S.A., with the project valued at around €2.9 million. Once the paperwork is signed, work is expected to take about four months.
The long-awaited project forms part of the Murcia-Almería high-speed rail line on the Mediterranean Corridor, specifically the stretch between Sangonera and Totana.
Two new roads are planned. One will extend Calle Lorenzo Rubio for about 230 metres from near the Local Police station straight to the future station. It will include a cycle lane, a path and lighting, making it accessible for both drivers and pedestrians.
The second will be a 930-metre bypass linking the RM-608 and RM-E10, designed to ease traffic pressure in the surrounding area. Four roundabouts are also included, three to keep vehicles flowing and one giving direct entry to the station.
Alhama's Councillor for Town Planning, Antonio José Caja, says the project represents years of effort finally paying off and describes it as a major investment for Alhama de Murcia. It's also just the first phase of a wider plan involving local food company El Pozo Alimentación, which hopes to extend the road behind its factory to divert heavy traffic away from busy streets such as Avenida Antonio Fuertes and Calle Tomillo.
Local officials are now calling on the regional government to complete the long-pending RM-2/A-7 junction, arguing it's essential if traffic and safety improvements are to be fully felt across the municipality.

Alhama de Murcia Tourist information office is located on the edge of the Plaza de la Constitución, just a few metres away from the underground car park and the Town hall of Alhama de Murcia.
The tourist office offers free guided audiotours in English which take visitors around the historical sites of interest in Alhama. These be loaned at any time, although allow an hour and a half to complete the tour, and when loaning the audio equipment visitors are asked to leave passports or ID cards with the tourist office.
The office also carries a full range of leaflets for the archaeological museum of Los Baños, which is built around the historic spa which gives Alhama its name, and the mountains of Sierra Espuña, which is also an important area within the municipality of Alhama. Areas such as El Berro and Gebas have a number of interesting routes which can be followed and there are several picnic areas and good walking routes within the Sierra Espuña natural park.
The tourist office also carries leaflets for the many cultural events and fiestas which take place in Alhama throughout the year, including Los Mayos, Semana Santa, Christmas,the Romería of La Candelaria and the Auto de los Reyes Magos in El Berro.
