€730,000 for emergency works to fix storm damaged roads in Málaga province
Repairs under way on five routes in Guadalhorce and Serranía de Ronda after landslips and embankment collapses
The Málaga provincial authorities are rolling out emergency repairs on five rural roads after the recent storms left embankments weakened and stretches of carriageway unsafe, with a total budget of 730,000 euros earmarked for the works. The aim is to get traffic flowing safely again as quickly as possible on three roads in the Guadalhorce Valley and two in the Serranía de Ronda.The president of the Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, stressed that the Roads and Works department moved fast once the damage was assessed. He explained that the first priority is always to reopen roads to traffic, and then to carry out “the necessary repairs” to restore them properly and ensure long term safety. The council highlights that all the contracts have been processed as emergency works to speed everything up.
The worst problems are in the Guadalhorce Valley. On the MA 3300 between Alhaurín de la Torre and Alhaurín el Grande, around 100 metres of embankment have partially collapsed, leaving half the road without support and causing a long crack. The area has been cordoned off and narrowed, and 250,000 euros will go into rebuilding the embankment with riprap walls, demolishing and relaying the road surface, and fixing the ditch.
On the MA 3400, the access to Gibralgalia in Cártama, a transverse drainage structure failed at kilometre 2, bringing part of the embankment down and affecting about 50 metres of the carriageway.
Here, some 220,000 euros will be spent stabilising the site, rebuilding the embankment with riprap, restoring the drainage and repairing the road. Meanwhile, the MA 5403 between Ardales and El Chorro has suffered breaks in the tarmac, damage to ditches and partial embankment collapses. Repairs worth 180,000 euros include resurfacing, sealing ditches with concrete and rebuilding the damaged slopes.
In the Serranía de Ronda, work is focused on clearing and securing mountain access roads. On the MA 8302, which leads to Genalguacil, 50,000 euros are being invested in removing rocks, soil and fallen trees from the route. A similar operation is under way on the MA 8301 to Jubrique, with 30,000 euros allocated. Together, the package of works is designed to restore normality as soon as possible on these storm hit roads and give drivers confidence that the routes are safe to use again.Image: Málaga Provincial Council
