Batten down the hatches!: Alicante weather forecast September 8-11
Storm warnings for heavy rain across the province from midday today
The storm and rain warnings for today, Monday
State meteorological agency Aemet has issued warnings for heavy rain and storms across the whole of Alicante province from 12pm today, Monday, at least until midnight.
There is an orange warning for the north and interior of the province, signifying significant risk to people and property, due to the 40-70% probability of downpours bringing up to 40 mm in an hour, and that storms may bring large hailstones and very strong gusts of wind.
For the south, there is a less severe yellow warning, indicating the same 40-70% probability of 20 mm of rain in an hour, and storms with hail and very strong gusts of wind.
At the time of publication, orange warnings had just been added for the whole province on Tuesday as well.
Monday, September 8
This afternoon is looking particularly treacherous
A very cloudy sky with downpours and storms that could be very heavy from midday, but these are less likely to be as severe in the south of the province.
Until then, minimum temperatures are up across the province, around 23-24ºC along the Costa Blanca but lower inland.
Maximums are down in the north to around 30ºC, but are still higher in the south and up to 35ºC in Orihuela city.
Winds in the morning are light and variable, predominantly from the south around midday.
Tuesday, September 9
Severe weather expected again on Tuesday
At midday today, Aemet updated the storm and rain warnings for Tuesday to orange for the north of Alicante province from 6am and for the south and the interior from 12pm.
These warnings include downpours of up to 40mm of rain in an hour, accompanied by hail and very strong gusts of wind. In northern coastal areas this rain could be persistent.
Again, minimum temperatures are up across the province and maximums are down in the north.
Temperatures will drop, particularly the maximums in some areas, only reaching up to 27-28ºC.
Winds in the morning will be light and from the south-east on the south coast, from the north on the north coast, and variable elsewhere, but will be generally easterly in the afternoon.
Wednesday, September 10
Cloud and maybe some rain across the northern half in the morning
Midweek is looking more settled, with cloudy intervals early on that should mostly clear in the afternoon.
There is still a 45-60% chance of scattered showers along the coast from Alicante city northwards, particularly in the morning but less likely later on.
The southern coast is looking cloudy in the morning and less so in the second half of the day, while the evening should be clear across the province.
Maximum temperatures are predicted to be around 28-30ºC in most areas, but as low as 26ºC in Benidorm.
Minimums are down to 19-20ºC along the coast and as low as 14ºC in the farthest inland parts of the province.
The wind should remain light and westerly in general.
Thursday, September 11
The sun will be back on Thursday
Few clouds are predicted for Thursday, with slightly higher minimum temperatures and maximums rising to 30-31ºC up and down the coast, and 33ºC in Elche and Orihuela city.
Winds are expected to be light and easterly to south easterly on the coast and westerly to north-westerly inland.
These conditions seem probable to continue into the weekend.
