Moreno hails a strong start to Semana Santa as Cádiz prepares for a big Wednesday
The Andalusian president says Holy Week is one of the “biggest attractions” and one of the “hallmarks” of Andalucía
Juanma Moreno has said he is “very satisfied” with how Semana Santa is unfolding so far in Andalucía, even after the small incidents reported in Seville.Speaking on Holy Tuesday before accompanying the Hermandad del Cerro del Águila on their penitential procession from the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows in Seville, the president of the Junta said, “I think everything is working well so far. It’s true we’re just getting started, with a few incidents, such as the fires we’ve had in the city, but otherwise, everything is going very well.” He added that “This afternoon I will be in Cádiz and tomorrow I will be in Málaga.”
Moreno also described Holy Week as “one of the biggest attractions” and one of the “hallmarks” of Andalucía, underlining just how important these days are across the region. He said he is trying to attend as many processions as possible, although he admitted he cannot be present at them all. He was joined at the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows by his son Fernando, whom he described as a keen and devoted brotherhood member who accompanies him whenever he can.
The Hermandad del Cerro del Águila procession began with the foreman dedicating the lifting ceremony to the victims of the Adamuz train accident and to Sandra Peña, the young Seville girl who took her own life after alleged bullying at school.
A calmer Holy Tuesday
Elsewhere in Seville, Holy Tuesday brought a welcome sense of calm after the earlier incidents. The day passed without problems, and the brotherhoods were once again the main focus. It was described as a historic Holy Tuesday, with all the processions taking place smoothly and no major disruption.
The cooperation of the brotherhoods helped avoid delays, and the good weather added to the atmosphere. It was the hottest day of Semana Santa 2026 so far, which meant crowds filled the streets but later enjoyed a night of near-perfect temperatures. The evening, especially with the three black brotherhoods and Dulce Nombre returning to their churches, was one of the most memorable moments of the week so far.Special praise was also given to the Cerro brotherhood, which once again brought the spirit of its neighbourhood into the centre of Seville. Residents, political representatives and many others were present for its departure. The brotherhood paid tribute to the victims of Adamuz and to Sandra Peña, with doves released and prayers offered for children affected by bullying.
Málaga and Cádiz in the spotlight
Holy Tuesday in Málaga was marked by a strong sense of devotion, colour and neighbourhood pride. The day centred on the Virgin of El Rocío, but also included Las Penas, Nueva Esperanza, La Estrella, El Rescate and La Sentencia. One of the most striking moments was the floral mantle of the Virgin of Sorrows, prepared by the Ayuntamiento’s Parks and Gardens Department using flowers and plant material from the city’s gardens.
In Cádiz, Holy Wednesday is set to bring Sentencia, Cigarreras, Aguas and Caminito onto the streets. It is also a special year for the Sentencia brotherhood, which is celebrating its silver anniversary carrying the Lord through the city. The Aguas brotherhood will depart from and return to the Oratory of San Felipe Neri because works have left Santa Cruz church closed.
Moreno, who is due to be in Cádiz, has also backed the city’s bid for the Declaration of International Tourist Interest. He said the request will have the support of the whole Andalusian Government and encouraged people across Spain to visit, saying they will leave “very satisfied with everything they can see in terms of devotion, faith, affection, culture and hope.”
