Until September 14 Annual fiestas in Cehegin
The festivities of Cehegín are held every year in honour of the Virgen de las Maravillas
The Giants and Big Heads take to the streets of Cehegín for the duration of the fiestas
The municipality of Cehegín in the north-west of the Region of Murcia celebrates its Fiestas Patronales in honour of the Virgen de las Maravillas between September 8 and 14 this year, with the events including children’s activities, lots of live music, a folk festival, a bands festival, sevillanas, flamenco, bullfighting and of course religious ceremonies. All of the activities are free unless specifically indicated in the listings below.
There are several venues in which the activities take place: click Cultural Centres Cehegín, for a summary of the Casa de Cultura, Patio del Convento, Aula de Cultura Cajamurcia, and Auditorio - (Parque Juan Carlos I). Tickets for paying events can be obtained from the Casa de la Cultura.
The sanctuary of the Virgen is the Convento de las Maravillas (the building opposite the Plaza del Convento), where many of the musical concerts take place. During the week the figure of the Virgen is transferred in a solemn procession to the church of Santa María Magdalena, which is right at the top of the old quarter of Cehegín, and she is brought back down again at the end of the fiestas.
Many of the open-air events take place in the Recinto Ferial, which is in Parque Ginéz Ibáñez (next to Parque Juan Carlos I), and this is where you´ll find tapas, the fairground and open-air bars throughout fiestas. The park is also where the peñas (fiestas groups) hold most of their activities.
