A fresh coat of sand for Cartagena's coastline before Easter
Five beaches, including La Manga and Los Nietos, will be widened in time for the first holiday visitors

The Cartagena Town Hall is currently working to add extra sand to five local beaches before the Easter break. Los Nietos, La Manga, Islas Menores, Los Urrutias, and Mar de Cristal are all being prepared for the first wave of spring tourists.
The specific locations are chosen by the regional Ministry of the Environment, which approves areas based on sand quality. To move forward, the Town Hall also needs a green light from the central government's Coastal Authority. This partnership has been in place for three years and is currently in the final stretch of a four-year work cycle.
The southern coast of the Mar Menor has had a rough winter. Storm 'Alice' washed away huge amounts of sand in October, while heavy rains in December and January brought mud and algae into the lagoon. But authorities report they have already cleared 60% more debris than they had by this time last year.
Residents have been very vocal about these improvements. After missing out on sand work last year, Los Urrutias residents raised the issue at the Town Hall, while those in Los Nietos are currently pushing for better sand quality and the removal of reeds near the marina.
This year's project will cost €90,800. The contract was awarded in 2025 to AMM Obra Civil, a firm from Beniel, under an agreement that can be extended for up to two more years.
