Los Narejos street renovation project competes for national architecture prize
The Revamped Avenida Río Nalón was officially presented in February 2025
The renovation and re-design of Avenida Río Nalón in Los Narejos is one of the projects which have been selected to compete for the prizes awarded every year by the Official College of Architects in Spain (CSCAE) in recognition of the commitment of the design to sustainability, urban regeneration and the quality of life for locals.
Overseen by the company Santa-Cruz Arquitectura, this is one of nine proposals in the Region of Murcia which have come through the first phase of selection: quiet an achievement, given that a total of 534 were entered into the hat across the country!
One of the key aspects of the Avenida Río Nalón project is the importance given to accessibility and the improvement of the urban environment, and the result has been the complete renewal of one of the main commercial areas in Los Narejos following an investment of over a million euros. The new avenue was officially presented in February 2005 and is now wider than it was before, as well as being more pedestrian-friendly and encouraging greater social cohesion. The street furniture and Led lighting have been updated, green areas have been enlarged and water consumption has been rationalized, making the whole area more energy-efficient and amenable.
