Murcia gets ready for pine processionary caterpillar season
Preventive measures kick off in popular forests and recreational areas across Murcia

It's that time of year again when the pine processionary caterpillars start appearing in Murcia's forests. They spend most of winter building their nests and so by late January to early February they begin moving in “processions” down the trees. This is the part that can be dangerous for people and pets, as contact with their hair can cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, and can even be fatal for animals.
To prevent the spread of this dangerous caterpillar, the regional government will begin ground treatments this Friday January 30. They will focus on forests and other recreational spots frequented by families and people out hiking and walking their pets.
María Cruz Ferreira, the region’s Secretary for Energy, Sustainability and Climate Action, explained that the campaign is all about prevention. “We act before spring, when the risk peaks. The idea is that families can enjoy the forests without worrying about caterpillars,” she said.

This year’s operation targets well-known forested spots such as Cresta del Gallo, La Luz in the El Valle and Carrascoy Regional Park, the road to the Romería in Torreagüera, the Santa Ana Sanctuary in Jumilla, and Salud in Lorca.
The teams will cover ten municipalities over ten days, starting in Bullas and moving through Pliego, Albudeite, Jumilla, Ricote, Murcia, Abarán, Calasparra, Lorca, and Moratalla.
The treatments use approved pest control products, and in some areas, nests are even removed by hand. Signs and controlled work zones help keep disruption to a minimum. This phase of the campaign costs around €35,000.
Visitors are urged to avoid touching caterpillars or their nests, keep a close eye on children, and make sure pets are safe, as contact can cause serious reactions in people and pets. If anyone shows symptoms such as swelling, salivation, or difficulty breathing, they should seek medical or veterinary help immediately.
