San Pedro del Pinatar mud baths get a €200k makeover
The local council has used European funding to strip away old barriers and replace the platforms with sustainable materials

The famous open-air mud baths at La Mota beach in San Pedro del Pinatar have officially reopened to the public following a major €200,000 facelift, just in time for the busy summer season. They used European Next Generation funds to replace the heavily weathered wooden walkways and platforms leading down to the bathing areas and beach.
Town officials say the refurbishment stripped away awkward physical barriers and added new walkways to provide a smooth, flat route right down to the water's edge, making the therapeutic baths more accessible to everyone, including elderly visitors, young families with prams, and people with mobility issues.
The upgrade is part of a much larger, €3 million 'Tourism Sustainability Plan' that will modernise the area.
Mayor Pedro Javier Sánchez said, "This is a vital improvement for our wellness tourism sector, which is one of the absolute pillars of our local economy. San Pedro del Pinatar is home to the largest open-air natural spa in the world. Keeping it modern, safe, and environmentally sustainable is exactly how we ensure people keep coming back."
The council's plan for the area also moves towards a smarter tourism model, balancing high visitor numbers with stronger protection for the fragile salt flats and the ecosystem of the regional park in general.
The new walkways are now open, with people reminded to stay on the designated platforms to help protect the surrounding dunes and protected parkland.

Oficina de Turismo, San Pedro del Pinatar
The municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar has one principal tourist information office which is open throughout the year, and then other tourist information points which open during the peak summer months. Due to its location on the fringes of the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean coastline, San Pedro del Pinatar has a period of intense summer tourism activity during the peak summer months, although is popular with retirees of all nationalities out of peak season.
Much of the tourism activity is directed into these peak months, although the Salinas natural park and health tourism hotels in San Pedro del Pinatar make this a popular destination throughout the year.
