Series of minor earthquakes in southern Alicante this weekend At 2.11pm on Sunday October 26, a 1.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded with its epicentre in the Ciudad Quesada area of Alicante province, just north of La Mata lagoon.

The earthquake was felt in nearby towns such as Rojales, Los Montesinos, Formentera del Segura and Benijófar, where several residents reported a slight tremor or underground noise, rather than a noticeable movement.

Seismic movements of this type are common in this part of southeastern Spain, which is considered an “area of moderate seismic activity”.

In fact, there we two more quakes of magnitude 2.2 and 2.4, respectively, in the Mediterranean Sea just off the Alicante coast on Sunday afternoon, too.

Then, this Monday morning, October 27, a magnitude 2 earthquake was detected very close to the coastline of Benidorm at 7.23am.

This time around, thankfully, all the quakes were only small and no damage or notable incidents have been reported.
